Sandwich

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

Lay the two slices of bread flat on a clean work surface. Spread the butter evenly on one side of each slice. The buttered sides will be the outside if you choose to toast the sandwich in a pan; if not toasting, butter still adds flavor and helps keep the bread from getting soggy.

  2. 2

    Mix condiments

In a small bowl or using the back of a spoon, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard together until combined.

  3. 3

    Assemble sandwich

Place one slice of bread buttered-side down. Spread the mayonnaise-mustard mixture evenly on the top (unbuttered) side of that bread. Layer the ham slices evenly over the condiment-spread bread. Add the cheese slice on top of the ham. If using, place the lettuce leaf and tomato slices on the cheese. Sprinkle the tomato with the salt and black pepper. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered-side up.

  4. 4

    Optional toasting (pan method)

Heat a nonstick skillet or frying pan over medium-low to medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the pan and cook 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden and crisp. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook another 2–3 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese begins to melt. If the bread is browning too quickly before the cheese melts, reduce the heat and cover the pan for 1–2 minutes to trap heat and help the cheese melt.

  5. 5

Optional toasting (panini or sandwich press)

Preheat your panini press according to manufacturer instructions. Place the assembled sandwich in the press and cook 3–5 minutes until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove the sandwich from the pan or press. Let rest 1 minute, then slice in half if desired. Serve immediately.
