Method
For the Toast or English Muffin
- 1
Preparation
If using English muffins, split them with a fork down the middle to keep the nooks and crannies intact. If using a loaf of bread, choose 1-inch-thick slices for best texture.

Preheat
Preheat a skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes if toasting on the stove. If using a toaster or oven broiler, set to medium/high heat (toaster: medium setting; oven: broil or 375°F/190°C if using oven).

Toast in skillet
Place the buttered side down on the hot skillet. Cook 2–3 minutes until golden brown and crisp. Flip and cook the other side 1–2 minutes until warmed through. If using a toaster, toast until edges are golden, about 2–3 cycles depending on your appliance. If using oven, place on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.

Toppings (choose and assemble)
- 6
Cream cheese & jam
Spread 1 tablespoon cream cheese evenly on a warm half or slice, then top with 1 teaspoon jam. Serve immediately.
- 7
Avocado toast
Mash half a ripe avocado in a small bowl with 1/8 tsp salt and a light grind of black pepper. Spread mashed avocado over the warm toast or muffin. Drizzle 1 teaspoon honey if you want a touch of sweetness. Serve immediately.

Egg-topped
Fry or poach one egg per serving: for fried, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat, crack egg in and cook until whites set and yolk reaches desired doneness (about 2–3 minutes for runny yolk). For poached, bring a shallow pan of water to a gentle simmer, add a splash of vinegar, swirl and slip in the egg; cook 3–4 minutes for a soft yolk. Place the cooked egg on the toasted muffin or bread, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, and serve.
