Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 2 oz Highwest Double Rye, 3/4 oz sweet vermouth, 1/4 oz orange curaçao, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir gently and steadily for about 30–45 seconds (roughly 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well-chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

If you chilled the serving glass with ice water, dump the ice water and strain out any remaining shards so the glass is dry but cold.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer (and a fine mesh if desired), strain the chilled cocktail into the chilled coupe or an old-fashioned glass over one or two large fresh ice cubes (or neat, if preferred).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel with the outer skin facing down above the glass and giving it a quick twist. Rub the peel's rim on the glass, then drop it into the cocktail (or discard) as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the spicy rye, sweet vermouth, and citrus-caramel notes from the curaçao.
