Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an Old Fashioned glass (rocks glass) in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and set aside while you prepare the cocktail to lightly chill the glass.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass, add 2 oz Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel bourbon, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Add enough ice to the mixing glass to fill it about three-quarters full. Stir gently and consistently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until the mixture is properly chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the chilling ice from the Old Fashioned glass if used. Place a large clear ice cube (or several large ice cubes) into the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the chilled bourbon mixture from the mixing glass into the prepared Old Fashioned glass over the large ice cube.

  6. 6

    Express and garnish

Take the orange peel and hold it over the glass with the outer (oily) side facing down. Give the peel a firm twist to express the oils over the drink, then wipe the peel around the rim and place it on the surface as a garnish.

  7. 7

Serve immediately and enjoy slowly to appreciate the bourbon’s aroma and flavor.
