Base & Hydration
Activated Charcoal & Flavor
Optional Garnish & Texture
Method
Prepare
- 1
Chill
If your coconut water is not cold, place it in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes or add ice at the end. Use cold ingredients for a refreshing result.
- 2
Measure all ingredients so they are ready. Use food-grade activated charcoal and measure carefully (do not exceed recommended amounts).
Combine & Emulsify
- 3
Mix liquids
In a blender or large jar, combine 2 cups coconut water and 1/2 cup filtered water. This thins the coconut water slightly for easier mixing.
- 4
Add activated charcoal
Add 1 teaspoon food-grade activated charcoal powder to the liquid. Activated charcoal can clump; adding it into moving liquid helps dispersion.
- 5
Sweeten & balance
Add 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 1 teaspoon maple or agave syrup, and a pinch of sea salt. The lime brightens the drink, the sweetener rounds bitterness, and the salt enhances flavor.
- 6
Blend or shake
Blend on low for 10–15 seconds, or place mixture in a tightly sealed jar and shake vigorously for 20–30 seconds, until the charcoal is evenly suspended and the liquid is uniformly dark gray/black with no visible clumps.
Finish & Serve
- 7
Taste and adjust: sample a small sip. If too strong in charcoal flavor, add 2–4 tablespoons more coconut water or a little more sweetener. If too weak, do not add more charcoal; instead increase lime or reduce dilution.
- 8
Prepare glass: place ice cubes (about 1 cup) into a serving glass if desired and add a few mint leaves for aroma.
- 9
Strain (optional) and pour: if you used a blender and want a smoother mouthfeel, pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into the glass to remove any tiny charcoal aggregates. Otherwise, pour directly over ice.
- 10
Garnish and serve: garnish with a sprig of mint and a thin lime wheel on the rim. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.
Safety & Notes
- 11
Activated charcoal can interfere with medication and nutrient absorption. Do not consume within several hours of taking prescription medications. Limit use to occasional consumption and consult a healthcare provider if unsure.
- 12
Do not exceed recommended charcoal amounts; 1 teaspoon per serving is generally considered modest for culinary use.
- 13
This recipe yields one serving. Scale ingredients proportionally for more servings.
