Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Elbow Macaroni

Once the water is boiling, add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and a pinch of salt. Cook according to package directions until al dente, typically about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and slightly golden.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 1 cup of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Remove the pot from heat and stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and combined.

  5. 8

    Season

Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt and 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper to the cheese sauce. Stir well to combine.

Combining

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Return the drained macaroni to the pot and pour the cheese sauce over the pasta. Stir gently until the macaroni is well coated in the cheese sauce.

  2. 10

    Serve

Serve the macaroni and cheese hot, optionally garnished with extra shredded cheese or black pepper on top.
