Method

Batter Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the cold water and egg. Slowly add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. The batter should be smooth; avoid over-mixing.

Onion Rings Preparation

  1. 3

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  3. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the prepared batter, making sure it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off before frying.

  4. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

  5. 7

    Drain and Serve

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
