Pickle Spears

Batter

Dipping Sauce (optional)

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pickles

Start by draining the large dill pickles and patting them dry with paper towels. Cut each pickle in half lengthwise, then cut each half into spears, resulting in 8 spears per pickle.

Batter Mixing

  1. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, cayenne pepper, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all dry ingredients are thoroughly combined.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, pour in vegetable oil and heat it over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to check the temperature for best results.

  2. 5

    Fry the Pickle Spears

Dip each pickle spear into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated. Carefully place the battered spears into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.

  3. 6

    Drain and Cool

Once cooked, remove the spears using a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat the frying process for any remaining spears.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve with Dipping Sauce

Serve the spicy deep-fried pickle spears hot with a side of ranch dressing mixed with hot sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
