Black Bean Patty

Toppings and Assembly

Method

Black Bean Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Black Beans

Drain and rinse the canned black beans. Place them in a large mixing bowl and mash them with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still with some texture.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

  3. 3

    Mix the Patty Ingredients

Add the sautéed onion and garlic mixture to the mashed black beans. Stir in the ground cumin, smoked paprika, oats (or breadcrumbs), lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  4. 4

    Form the Patties

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each portion into a patty shape.

  5. 5

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Cook each patty over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through.

Assembly

  1. 6

    Prepare the Rolls

While the patties are cooking, slice the burger rolls in half and toast them lightly if desired.

  2. 7

    Assemble the Burger

On the bottom half of each roll, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked black bean patty, sliced tomato, and sliced onion. If using, add slices of avocado.

  3. 8

    Serve

Top with the other half of the roll and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce or side.
