Black Bean Patty Preparation

Prepare the Black Beans
Drain and rinse the canned black beans. Place them in a large mixing bowl and mash them with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still with some texture.

Sauté the Vegetables
In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.

Mix the Patty Ingredients
Add the sautéed onion and garlic mixture to the mashed black beans. Stir in the ground cumin, smoked paprika, oats (or breadcrumbs), lime juice, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

Form the Patties
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form each portion into a patty shape.

Cook the Patties
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Cook each patty over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through.
Assembly

Prepare the Rolls
While the patties are cooking, slice the burger rolls in half and toast them lightly if desired.

Top with the other half of the roll and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce or side.
