Fried Calamari

Method

Fried Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Egg Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off, then coat it in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.

  6. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Sauté the Garlic

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 8

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir to combine.

  3. 9

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir well and bring to a simmer.

  4. 10

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 11

    Serve

Remove from heat and serve warm with the fried calamari.
