Cake Ingredients

Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, combine the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until well combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Icing Directions

  1. 8

    Prepare the Icing

In a medium bowl, sift together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar.

  2. 9

    Mix Butter and Cocoa

In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa-sugar mixture, alternating with the milk, and mix until smooth and well combined.

  3. 10

    Add Vanilla

Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

  4. 11

    Ice the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of icing on top. Place the second layer on top and spread icing over the top and sides of the cake.
