Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

Bake the Cake
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes
Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Heat the Mixture
Heat the milk mixture over medium heat until it begins to steam but not boil. Remove from heat.

Whisk Egg Yolks
In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks and cornstarch together until smooth.

Cook the Custard
Return the combined mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened (about 5-7 minutes).

Finish Custard
Remove from heat and stir in butter until melted. Allow to cool before serving.
Mixed Berry Compote

Cook the Compote
Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the berries break down and the mixture thickens, about 10-15 minutes.

Cool and Serve
Remove from heat and let cool. Serve over chocolate cake or vanilla custard.
