Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Flatbread Assembly

  1. 4

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up.

  2. 5

    Roll Out the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangular shape, about 1/4 inch thick.

  3. 6

    Add Marinara Sauce

Spread the marinara sauce evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

  4. 7

    Layer the Cheeses

Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the marinara sauce. Dollop the ricotta cheese in small spoonfuls across the flatbread, and sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top.

  5. 8

    Season

Sprinkle the Italian seasoning and black pepper over the cheese toppings.

  6. 9

    Bake the Flatbread

Transfer the flatbread to the oven (or onto the preheated pizza stone) and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges are golden brown.

  7. 10

    Garnish

Remove the flatbread from the oven and let it cool slightly before garnishing with fresh basil leaves. Cut into slices and serve.
