1. Prepare the Ingredients

Gather all ingredients. Measure out 2 oz of Basil Hayden's Bourbon, 0.5 oz of simple syrup, and 1 oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Also, prepare 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and set aside 5 fresh basil leaves.

2. Muddle the Basil

In a cocktail shaker, add the fresh basil leaves. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently crush the basil leaves to release their essential oils.

3. Mix the Cocktail

Add the measured Basil Hayden's Bourbon, simple syrup, lemon juice, and Angostura bitters to the shaker with the muddled basil. Fill the shaker with ice cubes (about 1 cup).

4. Shake Well

Secure the lid on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until well chilled.

5. Strain and Serve

Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass. Use a fine mesh strainer if you want to remove any basil bits for a smoother drink.

6. Garnish

Garnish with a twist of lemon peel over the drink, expressing the oils, and drop it in as a finishing touch. Optionally, you can float a basil leaf on top.
