Method
Fries
- 1
Prepare Oven (if baking)
Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F) if you plan to bake the fries. Arrange a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or lightly oil it.
- 2
Cook Fries
If using frozen fries, spread them in a single layer on the prepared sheet and lightly toss with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and 1 teaspoon salt. Bake in the preheated oven 15–20 minutes, turning once halfway, until golden and crisp. If pan-frying, heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, add the fries and 1 tablespoon oil, and cook 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until heated through and crisp.
- 3
When fries are done, keep warm while you make the sandwich.
Sandwich
- 4
Assemble
Spread the softened butter evenly on the outside face of both bread slices. If using mayonnaise inside, spread it on the inside of one slice. Place the cheese (1 oz) evenly on the inside of the other slice so it will be between the bread when closed.
- 5
Cook
Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low to medium heat. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down. Cook 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt. Carefully flip and cook the other side 2–3 minutes until golden and the cheese is fully melted. If the bread browns before the cheese melts, lower the heat and cover the pan briefly (30–60 seconds) to trap heat and help the cheese melt.
- 6
Remove the sandwich to a cutting board, let rest 1 minute, then cut diagonally or in half for a kid-friendly portion.
