Method

Prepare Espresso

  1. 1

    Brew

Brew a fresh double shot of espresso (about 2 oz). If you don't have an espresso machine, use very strong coffee (brewed at double strength) and let it cool slightly. The espresso should be hot when combined into the shaker to help create crema.

  2. 2

Allow the espresso to rest for about 20–30 seconds so it isn't scalding hot but still warm; this helps create a nice foamy crema when shaken with ice.

Mix & Shake

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

Into a cocktail shaker add the freshly brewed warm espresso (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), vodka (1.5 oz) and simple syrup (0.5 oz).

  2. 4

Dry shake (optional, for extra foam)

First shake without ice for 8–10 seconds. This emulsifies the espresso and creates more foam.

  3. 5

    Wet shake

Add a generous amount of ice to the shaker (enough to fill about two-thirds). Seal and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and you feel a good slosh. Vigorous shaking creates a thick, silky foam (crema) on top of the drink.

Strain & Garnish

  1. 6

    Double strain

Using a hawthorne strainer and, if available, a fine mesh strainer, pour the cocktail into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Double straining removes small ice shards for a cleaner texture.

  2. 7

Garnish by floating three coffee beans (arranged in a small triangle) on the foam. The three beans traditionally represent health, wealth and happiness.

  3. 8

Serve immediately while the foam is fresh and the drink is cold.
