Method
Prepare espresso
- 1
Make and cool espresso
Brew a fresh shot (about 1 oz) of espresso using an espresso machine, Aeropress, or very strong moka pot brew. Immediately transfer the shot to a small glass and allow it to cool slightly (5–10 seconds) so it doesn't overly melt the ice. If you prefer a smoother crema, double-strain the espresso through a fine mesh strainer into the shaker.
Shake and chill
- 2
Combine ingredients
Add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, the freshly brewed 1 oz espresso, and 0.25 oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.
- 3
Add ice
Fill the shaker roughly three-quarters full with ice (about 1 cup).
- 4
Dry shake (optional)
For a frothier crema, close the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 8–10 seconds (this emulsifies the espresso).
- 5
Wet shake
Add ice if you performed a dry shake (or if not, proceed) and shake vigorously for 12–20 seconds until the shaker is very cold to the touch and you see a thick, foamy crema forming.
- 6
Strain
Using the shaker's strainer (and a fine mesh strainer if desired), double-strain the cocktail into a chilled martini or coupe glass to remove ice shards and achieve a silky texture.
Garnish & serve
- 7
Garnish the drink with three coffee beans arranged on top of the crema. Serve immediately while the crema is fresh and the cocktail is cold.
