Method
Berry Base
- 1
Make berry syrup
Place the fresh mixed berries, granulated sugar, and hot water in a small bowl or jar. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to mash the berries until broken down and juices are released (about 30–45 seconds). Stir in the fresh lemon juice. Let sit for 5 minutes to macerate.
- 2
Strain the mashed berries through a fine mesh sieve into a small measuring cup or bowl, pressing on solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much juice as possible. Discard seeds/solids. You should have roughly 2-3 tablespoons of vibrant berry syrup; adjust sweetness with an extra 1/2 teaspoon sugar if needed.
Assemble Drink
- 3
Combine alcohol and syrup
In a cocktail shaker or mason jar, add the berry syrup, vodka (2 oz), and elderflower liqueur (1/2 oz). Fill the shaker with ice cubes (about 3/4 full).
- 4
Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well chilled (shaker becomes cold to the touch). If you don't have a shaker, stir vigorously in the jar for 20–30 seconds.
- 5
Finish and top
Strain the chilled mixture into a tall glass filled with fresh ice (about 1 cup). Top with 3 oz club soda and gently stir once to combine.
Garnish & Serve
- 6
Thread the extra whole berries onto a cocktail pick or drop them directly into the glass. Add a lime wheel to the rim and tuck a mint sprig into the drink for aroma. Optionally, lightly clap the mint between your palms before garnishing to release oils.
- 7
Serve immediately with a straw or stirrer. Advise guests to gently stir before sipping to lift any settled berry flavor.
