Preparation
- 1
Sauté the Vegetables
In a large pot, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions, minced garlic, and chopped bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- 2
Brown the Meat
Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the pot. Cook until browned, stirring occasionally, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
Cooking the Chili
- 3
Add Beans and Tomatoes
Stir in the drained kidney beans, diced tomatoes, and tomato sauce into the pot with the meat and vegetables. Mix well.
- 4
Season the Chili
Add the chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the pot. Stir to combine all the spices evenly.
- 5
Add Liquids
Pour in the beef broth and water. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a boil.
- 6
Simmer
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let the chili simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the better the flavors meld.
Serving
- 7
Serve Hot
After simmering, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot in bowls and enjoy your homemade chili!
