Potato Preparation

Breading and Frying

Method

Potato Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the Russet potatoes and cut them into quarters. Place the potato quarters in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook the Potatoes

Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and cook the potatoes until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let them cool slightly.

  3. 3

    Mash the Potatoes

Using a potato masher or fork, mash the potatoes in a bowl until smooth. Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to combine.

Breading and Frying

  1. 4

    Form the Tater Tots

Once the potato mixture is ready, scoop out about 1 tablespoon of the mixture and shape it into small cylinders or tots. Repeat until all the mixture is formed.

  2. 5

    Prepare the Breading Station

Set up a breading station with three bowls: one for flour, one for beaten egg, and one for breadcrumbs mixed with cornstarch.

  3. 6

    Bread the Tater Tots

Dip each potato tot first into the flour, then into the egg, and finally coat it with the breadcrumb mixture. Make sure they are well-coated.

  4. 7

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 8

    Fry the Tater Tots

Carefully add the breaded tater tots to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. 9

    Drain Excess Oil

Using a slotted spoon, remove the tater tots from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.

  7. 10

    Serve

Serve the tater tots warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
