Method

Preparing the Patty

  1. 1

    Mix the Patty Ingredients

In a bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

Divide the mixture into 2 equal portions and shape them into burger patties, about 3/4 inch thick.

Grilling the Onions

  1. 3

    Sauté the Onions

In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and slightly caramelized. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Cooking the Patties

  1. 4

    Grill the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side, until a nice crust forms.

  2. 5

    Flip and Add Cheese

Flip the patties and place 2 slices of Swiss cheese on each patty. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to your desired doneness.

Assembling the Patty Melt

  1. 6

    Butter the Bread

Spread butter on one side of each slice of marble rye bread.

  2. 7

    Assemble the Melt

On an unbuttered side of one slice of bread, place a patty with melted cheese, followed by the sautéed onions. Top with another slice of bread, buttered side up.

  3. 8

    Grill the Patty Melt

In the same skillet, grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  1. 9

    Slice and Serve

Once both sides of the patty melt are golden brown, remove from skillet. Slice in half and serve hot.
