Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Onions

Slice the medium onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the onions and cook until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Once done, set aside.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Take the ground beef and form it into a patty that is roughly 1/2 inch thick. Season both sides with salt and pepper to taste.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Patty

In the same skillet used for the onions, add a little more butter if necessary, and heat over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the beef patty to the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until it reaches your desired doneness. Add the cheddar cheese on top of the patty during the last minute of cooking, covering the skillet with a lid to help the cheese melt.

  2. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

While the cheese is melting on the patty, take the rye bread slices and spread butter on one side of each slice. Once the cheese is melted, carefully remove the patty from the skillet. On a clean plate, place one slice of buttered rye bread, then add the patty with melted cheese, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with the second slice of rye bread, buttered side facing out.

  3. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

Return the assembled patty melt to the skillet over medium heat. Grill for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.
