Method

For the Chicken Fried Steak

  1. 1

    Prepare the Breading Station

In three separate shallow bowls, set up your breading station: one with flour mixed with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika; the second with buttermilk; and the third with beaten eggs.

  2. 2

    Bread the Steaks

Take each cube steak and first dredge it in the seasoned flour, then dip it in buttermilk, and finally coat it in the beaten eggs. Return it to the flour to ensure a thick coating.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test it by dropping a small piece of bread into the oil; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

  4. 4

    Fry the Steaks

Carefully place the breaded cube steaks into the hot oil, cooking them for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches if necessary.

  5. 5

    Drain and Serve

Once cooked, remove the steaks from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Keep warm before serving.

For the Sides

  1. 6

    Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

Peel and chop the potatoes into small chunks. Boil in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. Drain and return to the pot.

  2. 7

    Mash the Potatoes

Add butter and milk to the drained potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Keep warm.

  3. 8

    Prepare the Green Beans

Trim the ends of the green beans and steam them in a pot for about 5-7 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.

  4. 9

    Season the Green Beans

Once cooked, season the green beans with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve alongside the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.
