Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it. If using ice water, discard ice water before straining.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker (not shaken), add 2 oz Fort Hamilton Rye Whiskey, 1 oz Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large, fresh ice (enough to come near the top). Stir gently but steadily for 30–40 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and the mixing glass feels cold to the touch.

  4. 4

    Prepare garnish

If using an orange peel, express the oils by holding the peel over the chilled glass and giving it a firm twist so oils spray onto the surface. Rub the peel around the rim if desired.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass to keep out small ice shards. Drop in one Luxardo maraschino cherry as garnish (or place it on a pick).

  6. 6

    Optional finishing touch

If you prefer a slightly drier Manhattan, stir an additional 1/4 oz of rye and 3/4 oz vermouth ratio on subsequent pours; otherwise serve immediately.
