Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the 1 cup of basmati rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse it under cold running water for about 2-3 minutes or until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.

  2. 2

    Soaking (optional)

For best results, soak the rinsed rice in water for 30 minutes. This step is optional but helps the rice cook more evenly and enhances its texture.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Measure Water

In a medium-sized pot, measure out 2 cups of water. If you're using salt and/or butter or oil, add them to the water at this point.

  2. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Place the pot over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.

  3. 5

    Add Rice

Once the water is boiling, carefully add the rinsed (and soaked) rice into the pot. Stir gently to ensure the rice is evenly distributed.

  4. 6

    Simmer

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer for about 15-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time, as it will let steam escape.

  5. 7

    Check for Doneness

After 15-20 minutes, check the rice. If all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender, it's done. If not, cover and let it cook for a few more minutes.

  6. 8

    Fluff and Serve

Once cooked, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice gently before serving.
