For the Gyro Meat

Method

Preparing the Gyro Meat

  1. 1

    Mixing the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb, ground beef, minced garlic, finely chopped onion, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, black pepper, egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Forming the Meat

Shape the meat mixture into a loaf or patty form. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Baking

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the meat for about 30-35 minutes, or until cooked through and nicely browned.

  4. 4

    Slicing

Once the gyro meat is cooked, let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly.

Making the Tzatziki Sauce

  1. 5

    Mixing the Sauce

In a medium bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber (make sure to drain excess water), minced garlic, chopped dill, lemon juice, and salt. Mix until smooth and well combined.

Assembling the Gyro

  1. 6

    Preparing the Pita

Warm the pita bread in a dry skillet over medium heat or wrap in foil and heat in the oven for a few minutes.

  2. 7

    Filling the Gyro

Place slices of gyro meat on the warm pita. Top with tzatziki sauce, sliced tomatoes, red onions, and shredded lettuce.

  3. 8

    Serving

Fold the pita over the fillings, serve immediately, and enjoy your homemade gyro!
