For the Calamari

For the Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Marinara Sauce

  1. 1

    Heat Olive Oil

In a saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil and allow it to heat up.

  2. 2

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  3. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, add oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  4. 4

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

    Finish with Basil

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving. Set aside and keep warm.

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 6

    Prepare the Squid

In a bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  2. 7

    Coat the Squid

In another bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and milk. Dip the squid rings into the egg mixture, then coat them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are evenly covered.

  3. 8

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 9

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated squid rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  5. 10

    Serve

Serve the fried calamari hot with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
