Prepare the Clams
Rinse the fresh surf clams thoroughly under cold water to remove any sand or grit. If necessary, soak them in fresh water for 30 minutes before rinsing.

Cook the Bacon
In a large pot over medium heat, cook the bacon slices until crispy. Remove the bacon and place it on paper towels to drain excess fat. Leave the bacon drippings in the pot.

Add Clams and Cream
Once the potatoes are tender, add the rinsed clams and heavy cream to the pot. Simmer for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the clams are cooked and opened.

Season and Serve
Remove the bay leaf, and season the chowder with salt and black pepper to taste. Crumble the cooked bacon and stir it in. Serve hot.
