Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Wash the Broccoli

Start by washing the broccoli florets under cold running water to remove any dirt or pesticides. Shake off any excess water.

  2. 2

    Cut the Broccoli

If the broccoli is not already in florets, cut the broccoli head into even-sized florets to ensure they cook uniformly.

Steaming

  1. 3

    Prepare the Steamer

Fill a pot with about 2 inches (5 cm) of water and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Place a steamer basket over the pot, ensuring it doesn’t touch the boiling water.

  2. 4

    Steam the Broccoli

Once the water is boiling, add the broccoli florets to the steamer basket. Cover with a lid and allow the broccoli to steam for about 5-7 minutes, or until they are bright green and tender-crisp.

  3. 5

    Check Doneness

After 5 minutes, check the broccoli for doneness by piercing a floret with a fork. If it’s easily pierced but still has a slight crunch, it is done.

Finishing Touches

  1. 6

    Season the Broccoli

Once the broccoli is steamed, carefully remove it from the steamer basket and place it into a serving bowl. Drizzle with olive oil, lemon juice, and sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste.

  2. 7

    Serve

Toss the broccoli gently to combine all the flavors. Serve immediately as a side dish.
