Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Peel the potatoes and cut them into equal-sized chunks, about 1-2 inches, to ensure even cooking.

  2. 2

    Optional Garlic Preparation

If using garlic, peel and crush the garlic cloves.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Boil Potatoes

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 tsp of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.

  2. 4

    Cook Garlic (if using)

In the last 5 minutes of boiling, add the crushed garlic cloves to the pot to infuse the flavor into the potatoes.

  3. 5

    Drain Potatoes

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander and return them to the pot.

Mashing

  1. 6

    Add Butter and Milk

Add the 4 tablespoons of butter and 1 cup of milk to the drained potatoes.

  2. 7

    Mash Potatoes

Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy. If desired, adjust the consistency with more milk.

  3. 8

    Season

Add 0.5 tsp of black pepper and additional salt to taste. Mix well.

Serving

  1. 9

    Garnish (if using)

If desired, stir in 0.5 cup of sour cream and top with chopped chives before serving.

  2. 10

    Serve

Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and enjoy warm.
