Pasta

Topping (Optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for pasta, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Make Roux

Once melted, add the flour to the butter, stirring continuously for about 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 7

    Incorporate Cheese

Reduce heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining and Serving

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained pasta to the cheese sauce, stirring gently until the pasta is well coated with the sauce.

  2. 9

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

In a small bowl, mix the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese together.

  3. 10

    Top and Bake (Optional)

If desired, transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the bread crumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes until golden and bubbly.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve hot, and enjoy your homemade mac-n-cheese!
