Method
For the Mozzarella Sticks
- 1
Prepare the cheese sticks
Remove the mozzarella cheese sticks from the packaging and place them in the freezer for about 30 minutes. This helps them hold their shape when frying.
- 2
Set up breading stations
In three separate shallow bowls, place the all-purpose flour in the first bowl, beat the eggs in the second bowl, and combine breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper in the third bowl.
- 3
- 4
Heat the oil
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the mozzarella sticks.
- 5
Fry the cheese sticks
Carefully add the breaded mozzarella sticks to the hot oil in batches, frying them for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
For the Marinara Sauce
- 6
Sauté garlic
In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic cloves and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn them.
- 7
Add the tomatoes and spices
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried basil, salt, black pepper, sugar, and red pepper flakes. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- 8
Cook the sauce
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
- 9
Serve
Serve the mozzarella sticks hot with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
