Method

Preparation

1

chill dishes

Place the sundae dishes in the freezer 10–15 minutes before assembling to keep ice cream from melting too fast.

2

If using fresh fruit, hull and halve strawberries and slice the banana. Have sauces at room temperature or gently warm the fudge or caramel (see warming step below).

Warming sauces (optional)

3

To warm hot fudge or caramel: place measured sauce in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 10–15 second increments, stirring between intervals, until pourable but not boiling (about 20–30 seconds depending on power). Alternatively, warm in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring, until warm and pourable.

Assembling the sundae

4

scoop ice cream

Remove dishes from freezer. Place 2 large scoops of vanilla ice cream in each chilled sundae dish (total 4 scoops across 2 dishes). If you prefer thicker sundaes, use 3 scoops per dish and adjust sauces accordingly.

5

add sauces

Drizzle about 1/2 tablespoon hot fudge over the scoops in each dish (total 1 tbs hot fudge used). Drizzle about 1/2 tablespoon caramel over the scoops in each dish (total 1 tbs caramel used). If using strawberry sauce, spoon about 1/2 tablespoon over one side of each sundae (total 1 tbs).

6

add fruit & mix-ins (optional)

If using banana, arrange half-slices along the edge of each sundae. Distribute halved strawberries evenly between dishes. Sprinkle crushed cookies or brownie pieces over the ice cream (about 1 tbs per dish if using).

7

finish with whipped cream & toppings

Top each sundae with 2 tablespoons whipped cream. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon chopped nuts across both sundaes (about 1/2 tsp per dish) and divide the rainbow sprinkles. Place one maraschino cherry on top of each sundae.

Serving

8

Serve immediately with long-handled spoons. Provide napkins. If preparing ahead, assemble just before serving to prevent ice cream from melting and whipped cream from becoming watery.
