Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill the glass

Place a martini/coupe glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink so it will be well chilled when served.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

Into a mixing glass or shaker filled halfway with ice pieces, pour 2 oz gin and 0.5 oz dry vermouth. If using, add 1 dash of orange bitters. The Classic Dry (Dry Martini-style) emphasizes gin, so keep proportions precise.

  3. 3

    Stir (preferred) or shake

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently and steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full spoon turns) to chill and dilute the cocktail about 20–25% (depending on ice). If you prefer a slightly more aerated, colder drink, shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds instead.

  4. 4

    Prepare the garnish

Discard ice or water from the chilled glass. Express the lemon peel by holding it over the glass with the outer (zesty) side facing down and give it a firm twist to release the oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink (or discard, per preference).

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Strain the stirred/shaken cocktail into the chilled martini/coupe glass using a julep or fine strainer to catch small ice shards. Serve immediately while cold.
