Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil Water
In a large pot, bring 4 liters of water to a boil. Add a generous pinch of salt.
- 2
Cook Spaghetti
Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 3
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside. Do not rinse.
Making the Marinara Sauce

- 5
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
- 6
Simmer Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little water.
- 7
Finish with Fresh Basil
Once the sauce has thickened, stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves, and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained spaghetti to the saucepan with the marinara sauce. Toss well to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
- 9
Serve
Plate the spaghetti and top with grated Parmesan cheese. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
