Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Sauce

In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until softened.

  3. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Add the canned San Marzano tomatoes, salt, black pepper, sugar, and chopped basil to the saucepan. Stir well and let simmer for about 20 minutes.

Cooking the Optional Ingredients

  1. 4

    Cook Italian Sausages

Grill or pan-fry the spicy Italian sausages until fully cooked, about 10-12 minutes. Slice before serving.

  2. 5

    Cook Portobello Mushrooms

In a separate skillet, sauté sliced portobello mushrooms in olive oil until tender, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 6

    Prepare Meatballs

Cook the meatballs in a skillet with a little olive oil until browned and cooked through, about 10-15 minutes.

  4. 7

    Grill the Chicken Breast

Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper, then grill until cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side. Slice before serving.

Assembly

  1. 8

    Combine Spaghetti and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the saucepan with the sauce. Toss to coat the spaghetti evenly with the sauce.

  2. 9

    Serve

Plate the spaghetti and top with your choice of grilled sausages, sautéed portobellos, meatballs, or sliced chicken breast. Garnish with additional basil if desired.
