Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, fill it with water and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring the water to a rolling boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Once the water is boiling, add 8 cups of bowtie pasta. Stir occasionally and cook according to package directions, usually about 8-10 minutes until al dente.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making the Tomato Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large saucepan or skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Sauté Onion

Add 1 chopped medium onion to the pan and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes translucent.

  3. 6

    Add Garlic

Stir in 3 minced garlic cloves and cook for an additional 1 minute, being careful not to let it burn.

  4. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in 28 oz of crushed canned tomatoes. Then, add 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of dried basil, 0.5 teaspoon of salt, 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Stir to combine.

  5. 8

    Simmer Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.

  6. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained bowtie pasta to the sauce and toss to coat evenly. If needed, adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper to taste.

  7. 10

    Serve

Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil if desired.
