In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and sugar over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is heated but not boiling.

Add Flavoring
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and your chosen flavoring (e.g., strawberry puree or chocolate syrup).

Chill the Custard
Transfer the custard base to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until completely chilled (at least 4 hours or overnight).

Churn the Custard
Pour the chilled custard into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
