Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are deep golden brown and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic and Deglaze

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. Pour in the white wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Allow the wine to reduce for about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Simmer the Soup

Add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes to meld the flavors.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Baguette

While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven until golden brown, about 10 minutes.

  5. 5

    Serve the Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with toasted baguette slices, and sprinkle generously with grated Gruyère cheese. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.

  6. 6

    Enjoy!

Serve hot, and enjoy your delicious French Onion Soup!
