Make the Cream Cheese Mixture
In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and sugar together until smooth. Fold in the whipped topping until well combined.

Layer the Ingredients
In a large serving dish, start by layering vanilla wafer cookies at the bottom. Then, add a layer of sliced bananas followed by a layer of the pudding mixture and then the cream cheese mixture. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a pudding layer.

Prepare the Meringue
In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar on high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar for meringue, continuing to beat until stiff peaks form.

Top and Bake
Spread the meringue over the top of the pudding, making sure to seal the edges. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes or until the meringue is golden brown.

Cool and Serve
Let the banana pudding cool at room temperature for a bit, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
