Cocktail Base

Method

Cocktail Base

  1. 1

    Prepare glass (optional rim)

If you want a salted rim, rub the lime wheel around the glass edge and dip it into coarse or smoked salt. Set the glass aside.

  2. 2

    Muddle herbs

In a cocktail shaker, place 6 basil leaves and (if using) 3 cilantro leaves. Gently clap one basil leaf between your palms to release aroma and add to the shaker. Lightly muddle the herbs just to bruise the leaves and release oils — avoid over‑muddling to prevent bitterness.

  3. 3

    Add liquids

Add 2 oz tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, and 0.5 oz honey‑agave syrup to the shaker with the muddled herbs. Add 2 dashes of orange bitters.

  4. 4

    Dry shake

Without ice, shake vigorously for about 10 seconds. The dry shake helps integrate the honey‑agave and extract more herb aroma.

  5. 5

    Shake with ice

Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled (the outside of the shaker becomes cold and slightly frosty).

Finish & Garnish

  1. 6

    Strain

Place a large ice cube (or fill the prepared glass with fresh ice) and double‑strain the cocktail into the glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch herb bits.

  2. 7

    Optional lengthen

If you prefer a lighter, longer drink, top with 1.5 oz club soda (or sparkling water) and gently stir once to combine.

  3. 8

    Garnish and serve

Express the lime wheel over the drink and drop it in. Slap the small basil sprig to release aroma and rest it on the drink as garnish. Serve immediately.
