Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Build and stir

Fill a mixing glass with plenty of ice. Add 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz amaro, 0.5 oz sweet vermouth, and (if using) 0.25 oz simple syrup. Add 2 dashes aromatic bitters and 2 dashes orange bitters.

  2. 2

    Stir to chill and dilute

Stir the mixture briskly for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. The goal is a silky, well-integrated texture and a chilled temperature around 10–12°C (50–54°F).

  3. 3

    Strain and serve

Strain the cocktail through a julep strainer or Hawthorne into an old-fashioned glass over a single large ice cube (or a few large cubes).

  4. 4

    Garnish

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm twist to release the oils, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  5. 5

Optional adjustments: If you prefer a drier, more spirit-forward profile, omit the simple syrup or reduce sweet vermouth to 0.25 oz. For a slightly more bitter, herbal character, choose a more assertive amaro like Montenegro; for milder, choose Averna.
