Topping (optional)

Method

Prepare Pasta

  1. 1

    Cook the Macaroni

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Make Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Create the Roux

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until it forms a smooth paste.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 4

    Incorporate Cheeses

Reduce the heat to low and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese and 4 ounces of softened cream cheese. Stir until the cheeses melt and the sauce is smooth.

  4. 5

    Season the Sauce

Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard powder. Mix well to combine and remove from heat.

Combine and Serve

  1. 6

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce. Stir until all the pasta is well-coated with the sauce.

  2. 7

    Optional Topping

If desired, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese and 1 teaspoon of paprika. Sprinkle over the mac and cheese.

  3. 8

    Bake (Optional)

For a crispy topping, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  4. 9

    Serve

Remove from the oven, let cool for a few minutes, then serve warm. Enjoy your creamy macaroni and cheese!
