Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This will ensure that the cake bakes evenly.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Baking Pan

Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan, or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 4

    Cream Butter

In another bowl, cream the softened butter until light and fluffy. This should take about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 5

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk to the creamed butter. Mix until well incorporated.

  4. 6

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until combined. Be careful not to overmix.

  5. 7

    Add Optional Ingredients

If using, fold in the chocolate chips and/or chopped nuts into the batter.

Baking

  1. 8

    Pour Batter into Pan

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.

  2. 9

    Bake

Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  3. 10

    Cool and Serve

Once baked, remove from the oven and allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve.
