Method
Base spirit (choose one)
- 1
Select your spirit
Decide which spirit to use as the base. Use 2 oz of the chosen spirit. Choices and general flavor results: Blanco tequila for bright agave-forward cocktails; aged tequila for richer, oak‑backed sips; gin for herbaceous/citrus; whiskey for warm, spiced; aged rum for molasses/vanilla; vodka for a neutral backbone.
Citrus & modifiers
- 2
Balance the drink
Add 0.75 oz fresh lime juice and 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice to the shaker if you want bright acidity. If a softer sweet note suits your spirit (e.g., rum or aged tequila), use 0.5 oz honey syrup instead of simple syrup. For a classic three-part structure (spirit, sweet, sour) use 0.5 oz simple syrup and 0.75 oz lime. For a more cocktail-bar style (e.g., margarita or daiquiri variation) add 0.5 oz orange liqueur with the 0.75 oz lime.
- 3
Use of vermouth or amaro
If using gin or whiskey for a stirred style, add 0.5 oz dry vermouth (for a brighter, drier profile) or 0.25 oz amaro for depth and bitter herbal notes. Adjust to taste: a little goes a long way.
Bitters & aromatics
- 4
Add bitters
Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters to the mixing vessel for complexity and aromatic lift. If you prefer herbaceous notes, slap and add the fresh herb sprig (mint/basil/thyme) to the shaker or mixing glass before combining ingredients.
Mixing & technique
- 5
Shaken cocktails (bright, citrus-forward)
If your recipe includes fresh citrus (lime/lemon) and syrups, combine chosen 2 oz spirit, juices, syrup/liqueur, bitters, and herbs (if using) in a shaker with a generous scoop of ice. Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and slightly frosted. Double-strain into a chilled coupe or rocks glass over fresh ice depending on style.
- 6
Stirred cocktails (spirit-forward)
If you chose whiskey, gin + vermouth, or you prefer a spirit-forward build without fresh citrus, add ingredients and ice to a mixing glass and stir gently for 20–30 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted (about 20–25% dilution by eye/feel). Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.
Garnish & serve
- 7
Express a citrus peel over the top of the finished cocktail by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm twist to release oils. Rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink or place it on the edge. Add the fresh herb sprig as a final aromatic garnish. Add ice as appropriate (none for up presentations, fresh cubes or a large sphere for on-the-rocks). Serve immediately.
