Base & Ice

Method

Prepare Flavor

  1. 1

    Muddle fresh ingredients

If using fresh fruit (berries) or herbs (mint, basil) or cucumber: place chosen ingredient(s) in a mixing glass or shaker. Gently muddle 3–6 times to release juices and aromatics without pulverizing (for berries: 3 berries; for cucumber: 3 slices; for herbs: 4–6 leaves).

  2. 2

    Add syrup or juice

Add selected sweeteners or juices (ginger syrup, pineapple juice, passion fruit pulp, or flavored liqueur) to the muddled ingredients so flavors integrate. Measure amounts as listed and stir briefly to combine.

Build & Shake

  1. 3

Add the base spirit (2 oz neutral vodka or white rum), fresh lime juice (0.75 oz), and simple syrup (0.5 oz) into the shaker with the prepared flavor. Fill the shaker with fresh ice cubes (about 1 cup).

  2. 4

Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the ingredients are well-chilled and diluted.

Finish & Serve

  1. 5

Double strain the cocktail into a chilled highball or coupe glass over fresh ice using a fine mesh strainer if you muddled berries or seeds, otherwise single strain is fine.

  2. 6

Top with club soda or sparkling water (about 2 oz) to add effervescence. Gently stir once to marry the soda with the cocktail.

  3. 7

Garnish with an appropriate item depending on flavor chosen: lime wheel for citrus, herb sprig for basil or mint, or a whole berry or cucumber slice for fruit/cucumber versions.

  4. 8

Serve immediately. Encourage guests to 'add any flavor' by choosing one or combining the listed flavor additions; adjust simple syrup or liqueur to taste if a sweeter profile is desired.
