Method
Iced Tea Base
Brew the Tea
Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and add 4 black tea bags (or equivalent loose leaf in an infuser). Steep for 5 minutes for a robust flavor (3–4 minutes for lighter tea).
Sweeten While Hot
Remove the tea bags (or strain leaves). While the tea is still hot, stir in 1 cup granulated sugar until fully dissolved. This creates a simple sweet tea concentrate and ensures even sweetness. Taste and adjust: reduce sugar if preferred.
Dilute and Cool
Pour the sweetened tea into a large pitcher. Add 4 cups cold water to dilute to serving strength. Stir to combine. Let the tea cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until cold (at least 1 hour).
Citrus & Flavor
Add Lemon
When the tea is chilled, stir in 1 cup fresh lemon juice. Taste and adjust: add up to 1/4 cup more lemon juice if you prefer brighter tartness. If using bottled lemon juice, reduce slightly to taste.
Assemble and Serve
Fill tall glasses with about 1 cup ice cubes each. Pour chilled tea over the ice, leaving room for garnish. Garnish each glass with a lemon slice and optional orange slice. Serve immediately.
Optional Variations
Mint Variation
Bruise 8 mint leaves gently and add to the pitcher after adding lemon juice. Let steep in the refrigerator for 15–30 minutes, then remove mint before serving for a fresh mint aroma.
Peach or Fruit Variation
Stir in 1 tablespoon peach syrup or 2 tablespoons peach puree per pitcher (adjust to taste) before chilling for a peach Nestea-style drink. Mix well and strain if using fresh puree to remove pulp if desired.
Lower-Sugar Option
Replace the 1 cup sugar with a sugar substitute to taste or reduce sugar to 1/2 cup for a less-sweet version. If using a granulated sugar substitute, dissolve while tea is hot as above.
