Prepare the Onions
Slice the onion thinly. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.

Form the Patty
In a bowl, combine the ground sirloin with salt and black pepper. Form into 2 equal patties.

Cook the Patties
In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness.

Assemble the Patty Melt
On a slice of rye bread, place a cooked patty, followed by a slice of Swiss cheese and some sautéed onions (if desired). Top with another slice of rye bread.

Serve
Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm.
