Method

Preparation

1

Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2

Prepare the Beans

In a large mixing bowl, combine the canned navy beans, kidney beans, and black beans. Drain and rinse them under cold water before adding to the bowl.

3

Sauté the Vegetables

In a skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of oil and sauté the chopped onion and bell pepper for about 5-7 minutes until they are softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Mixing the Sauce

4

Combine Sauce Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

Baking

5

Mix Everything Together

In a large baking dish, combine the beans, sautéed vegetables, and sauce. If using, add the chopped bacon at this stage.

6

Bake the Beans

Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbly and slightly caramelized on top.

Serving

7

Garnish and Serve

Remove the baked beans from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired, and serve warm.
