Preparation
- 1
Trim the Pork
Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder to ensure it cooks evenly and isn't too greasy.
- 2
Make the Rub
In a bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to create a spice rub.
- 3
Season the Pork
Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it is evenly coated. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Cooking
- 4
Prepare the Cooker
If using a slow cooker, set it to low. If using an oven, preheat to 300°F (150°C).
- 5
Add Ingredients to Cooker
Place the seasoned pork shoulder in the slow cooker or a roasting pan. Pour apple cider vinegar and chicken broth around the meat.
- 6
Cover and Cook
Cover the slow cooker or pan with a lid or aluminum foil. Cook for 8 hours on low in the slow cooker or 4-5 hours in the oven, until the meat is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
- 7
Shred the Pork
Once cooked, remove the pork from the cooker and let it rest for 10 minutes. Use two forks to shred the meat into bite-sized pieces.
- 8
- 9
Serve
Serve the pulled pork on sandwich buns with additional BBQ sauce, if desired.
